Scarcely 20% of plastics are recycled in Europe ,the rest go to incineration, landfill or export.
Plastics unique properties like strength, rigidity, flexibility which are combined with affordability and durability make them a perfect alternative to other materials (e.g. glass, metal, wood etc.).
They are widely applied in number of sectors and their use is constantly rising starting from packaging, construction to telecommunications and electronic equipment.
As a result, the total share of plastic waste is getting more and more extensive. This means that more emphasize should be put on plastic recycling in order to achieve environmental sustainability.
This emphasize should consist mainly on promotion of successful collection schemes in order to enhance separate collection of polymers and/or their recovery from bulk collection in specific waste streams.
The plastic industry is an important sector of the European economy. Plastic products are omni-present in our everyday life.
They are an extensively used material in number of industries e.g.: automotive, electrical & electronic, building & construction, and food & beverage sector. Due to distinctive properties of plastic as well as its growing innovation applications, the trend in production for this material will continue to grow.
